Our experience as host family! Featured

This half of the year was very special to me and my family. We had the great opportunity to get to know about american culture without being in The United States. That was possible because we hosted a 16-year-old teenager who was from Harrisonville, Missouri, due to the big efforts and the coordinated work between Alberto Hurtado School, specially the english teacher, Carmen Gloria Hormazábal, and Friends Chile Project Manager, Miss Emilia Larrachea. Our guest was Collin Schlegel and he arrived in Villarrica on March 14th, after being some days in the city of Santiago. Before meeting Collin personally, me and my family were a little nervous about living with a person who comes from very far away and has a different lifestyle. But at the moment he arrived we knew it was going to be a great time for all of us. We started to share and learn from the other immediately. The language was not a problem. We just had to talk him slower and everyone could understand perfectly. Collin stayed about 3 weeks with us. During those days, he tried some chilean traditional recipes and he did many activities. He attended to Alberto Hurtado School and made lots of friends. In our free time, we enjoyed going around the city, visiting some nice surroundings, eating tasty food, watching movies and so much more. As the days happened, we treated him just like another member of our family and every moment we shared was very funny and interesting. Some of the best moments we had were to celebrate Chile national football team victory in the 2015 Copa America and Independence Day, on 4th July. By the end of his stay, we gained a new brother and Collin gained a new family, so when he left it was sad. If I would have to summarize this experience I'd say that it was an incredible and tremendously enriching experience for everyone and we will never forget it. We are very grateful to have had this amazing time in our lives. If you ever host a foreigner in your house, don't be scared. Enjoy as much as possible and you will see soon how valuable it is!

Hello everyone! My name is Nicolás. I am an 19-year-old chilean boy, born and raised in Villarrica. I consider myself as a cheerful and friendly person, so I really like meeting new people. I enjoy doing sports and taking photographs. I'm very grateful to "Project Friends Chile" for allowing me to know different cultures and places.
